Teacher Killed and 25 Girls Abducted in Armed Clash at Nigerian School
Gun-wielding individuals have killed a teacher and abducted at least 25 students in an attack on a educational institution for young women in the northwestern part of Nigeria, according to police.
The criminal group breached the public educational institution for female students in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at around 4 AM local time on Monday, authorities reported.
The armed individuals "confronted officers on duty in a shootout" before climbing over the boundary wall and taking the pupils captive from their hostel, an official report indicated.
An educational worker was fatally shot while defending the students. A second sustained gunshot wounds and is now being treated medically.
Observers recounted a large group of attackers, identified in the area as outlaw groups, who arrived firing sporadically to create fear.
Community members informed journalists that the armed men then led a group of female students into adjacent wilderness.
The authorities announced they had sent "extra specialized police forces, in coordination with armed forces and community security teams" to the area.
A organized locating and saving mission is underway in surrounding forests and believed flight corridors.
In the past few years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who frequently execute kidnappings to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The incident in Kebbi State underscores the continuing safety emergency plaguing the region, resulting in households in Maga in a condition of terrified weariness as they wait and hope for their young ones' unharmed reappearance.
Security crisis in Nigeria's northern territories has worsened considerably in recent months, with schools experiencing the greatest impact of the conflict.
