An Emotional Milestone as Rosenior Overcomes Obstacles

"Rosenior represents an excellent coach who knows football back to front, which is what matters most.

Those are the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, who earned his groundbreaking debut for the Blues' first team as a substitute back in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea named Strasbourg boss Rosenior, aged 41, as their next manager after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of a multi-club ownership group which also controls the London club.

There have been only 12 of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – excluding individuals holding interim positions – in the Premier League since it began 34 years ago.

"What really strikes me about Liam is that he grew up and played not far from here, he understands the local fans," continued Canoville.

"When youngsters see someone like Liam managing the team they support, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a household that champions equality… it is profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"So yes, this represents an enormous moment for Chelsea, for the capital, for all aspiring individual dreaming big.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Exactly Do the Statistics Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed Chelsea manager in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's inaugural black manager.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English manager in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional current Premier League boss from a minority ethnic background.

The scarcity of ethnic minority managers across the English game corresponds with an absence of representation at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023 report, forty-three percent of top-flight players come from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

However, analysis by the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding senior coaching level, according to data provided by 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

For all coaching positions – including head coaches – from the same eleven clubs, the figure is just 5%.

"He's certainly made history in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea head coach, and we want to witness more such appointments," stated the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of talent present in the ethnic minority groups... aspiring coaches desire a chance to show their capabilities. We need to continue to work hard to dismantle those obstacles once and for all."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become one of only four permanent English managers currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's other big five leagues in terms of homegrown representation.

16 of the 20 first division coaches in Italy are Italian, 11 in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve in the Bundesliga are German while 10 in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt all young English managers from an academy background are, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It is truly inspirational to up-and-coming British coaches in the system to witness an individual land such a role with that profile and everyone hopes he will be highly successful."

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., played for clubs such as Fulham, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his managerial career peaked with a five-month spell at the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

Two years ago, he received a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

After Liam retired from playing he pursued a path in management. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, and in one piece he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that race does not determine coaching skill arguing that opportunities must be awarded based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he has often stated: how significant lack of diversity results in a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

During an interview for a football podcast, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "hard to manage" and "emotional", noting that he understood the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to join him with a move from France to Chelsea this summer.

In further newspaper articles, he also confessed he was "embarrassed" to hear an unnamed coach make a discriminatory remark. He vowed his support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and wrote a public message to the former US President while he was in office, accusing him of "overt" racism.

He has subsequently made his name in the dugout – initially with Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "as good a coach as I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club earlier this week prior to putting pen to paper on a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues had the top flight's pioneering black boss with Gullit as well as the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
